The book is an engaging story that proves the message: "you don't have to be big to be clever!". The plot centers around Cosmo, a small dinosaur in Volcano Valley who wants to play boulder-ball with the bigger dinosaurs but is dismissed for his size. His friend Patty is also sad because she is too slow. When Tyro the terrible, hungry Tyrannosaurus appears, all the large dinosaurs hide, and it is up to Cosmo and Patty to use their wit to save the day by tricking Tyro into a lake. Impressed and grateful, the other dinosaurs finally agree that Cosmo will make the best captain.
